In the watchmaker's workshop, a burnisher is used for polishing cut edges on steel parts. Depending on the desired width of the polishing edge (bevel), the edge is pre-ground more or less finely before polishing. When polishing steel on steel, either oil or polishing pastes (e.g. Unipol blue) are used.
