Book about the repair of wristwatches and pocket watches
In the last 10 years this watch book has developed into the standard work for the repair of wristwatches and the repair of pocket watches. Many watchmaking schools use it for training purposes, watchmakers for reference purposes and hobbyists to get a sound introduction to the repair of pocket watches and wristwatches. The watch book by Hans Jendritzkis "The modern watchmaker" has been incorporated into this unique watch book. Something similar is on the book market e.g. Not to be found at the moment.
This watch repair textbook, updated and revised again in 2016, deals in detail with the repair of simple pocket watches and wristwatches, i.e. watches without complications. The target group of watch lovers is increasingly addressed, but there are also valuable suggestions for watchmakers.
Watch repair book
On the subject of the repair of small mechanical watches (pocket watch and wristwatch) there was only one recent watch book: "The modern watchmaker" by Hans Jendritzki. It was valued for its uniqueness and has been translated into eight languages. Thanks to the modern conception of this book, thousands of watchmakers have learned their trade or improved their working methods. It was a great help to watch lovers because of its clarity and easily understandable presentation in words and pictures.
With the "renaissance" of small mechanical watches, the watchmaker's profession became interesting again and numerous interested "non-specialists" developed a new and strong interest in an easily understandable watchmaker's textbook with comprehensible work steps and numerous informative drawings and photos.
The author Michael Stern, who has been taking care of the preservation of old watch literature for a long time, has now published a new watch book on this subject using the old Jendritzki template. Horst Heydt was at his side as a co-author. Both were in turn supported by the master watchmakers C. Höller and H. Stevens.
When Hans Jendritzki designed his watch revision book, the essential prerequisites were different from today. The authors were looking for a contemporary solution and were faced with the task of taking today's conditions into account.
Taking into account the wider audience - watchmakers and interested non-specialists - changes, additions and expansions, but also deletions, were planned and implemented.
The didactic way of describing clock repairs has been changed: the clock is now viewed from the outside in. Everyone can get out of the watch repair at many points after their ability. If it is enough for one to be able to open a pocket watch or wristwatch, the next one wants to at least expand the clockwork. And if that is not enough, the dismantling of the movement and its repair will be brought closer to you "step by step".
Introductory notes to each chapter are helpful to the interested non-specialist. As soon as the movement is discussed, the Peseux 7001 caliber (now ETA 7001) is used throughout for clarification.
Even if the essential basics of precision mechanics and the repair of wristwatches and pocket watches have remained unchanged, attempts have been made to incorporate newer tools, methods and materials. Here, some suppliers and sources of supply are also named in order to make it easier for interested parties to get started with watch repairs.
In the present watch repair book, the tried and tested have been preserved and the new taken into account!
In an apparently successful cooperation between the authors, Hans Jendritzki's watch repair book has been fundamentally revised, creating a new, better and clearer basic structure with general introductions, which are also interesting for the specialist, in a total of 23 chapters, with earlier chapters being combined in a new, subdivided system. With regard to the restoration of clocks, not only are the references in many book chapters commendable, but also the new inclusion of the "cylinder escapement" in function and repair.
In contrast to the original, not only general information about watch repairs have been added. The authors understand how to bring difficult facts into a graphic, uncomplicated, refreshingly simple language and form, so that even without the considerably expanded, consistently high-quality illustration, the ambitious non-specialists and amateur watchmakers who are newly examined quickly become apparent in addition to the watchmaker professionals Being able to "make your picture" in several ways and quickly grasp the technical background, work processes and possible sources of error in the repair of wristwatches and pocket watches.
The descriptions are precise and correct, and the images are prepared in such a way that they optimally document the work processes involved in repairing wristwatches and pocket watches along with the text. Many images are self-explanatory in their excerpts and the attached short text. Images and text are related to each other in the new editions and the new basic structure means that the tedious search for the images associated with the text in the old original is now a thing of the past. The entire new watch repair book shows the didactic and technical competence of the authors and is therefore also a successful continuation of the original watchmaking textbook.
Old and new work materials and tools are presented to repair wristwatches and pocket watches, work instructions are given, alternative techniques and possibilities are named and the sometimes controversial discussion about cleaning and oiling wristwatches and pocket watches is not excluded.
The updating of the use of modern materials, but also the use of the timing machine up to the latest developments with computer technology, close a gap that was previously noticeable in the watch literature and are also a current, extremely successful, technically well-founded summary with a high level.
The volume of the fifth edition of the watch book "The wrist and pocket watch in repair" was 136 pages - the new version and revision has become more than twice as strong with 312 pages. Some of Hans Jendritzki's recommendations, which were sometimes highly controversial, were no longer reprinted, and in other critical cases appropriate warnings and restrictions were clearly given to assess the condition of a watch. Approx. 370 new images were added.
Work steps or contexts of wristwatch and pocket watch repairs have been added in words and pictures for better comprehensibility and also open up the technology and repair of wrist and pocket watches to the ambitious non-specialist and hobbyist.
References to sources of supply and Internet addresses that were updated in 2014 are also very positive. The high quality in terms of content and letterpress printing of the thread-stitched watch book in the format 14 x 24 cm is explained by the commitment of the authors to forego possible profits, but in the best sense to present a new, understandable and comprehensible "picture book" of the wristwatch, which is ideal for self-study and for training watchmakers.
