In mechanical clock movements, the length of the pendulum is determined by the movement's gear ratios. Therefore, the indicated pendulum length cannot arbitrarily be altered.
Pendulum Swing
This measurement indicates the vibration of the pendulum measured at the circumference of its bob. In order to provide sufficient clearance for the pendulum bob, the inside width of a clock case should be approx. 2 cm greater than the pendulum's swing.
Automatic Beat Adjustment
Most SELVA longcase clock movements have an automatic beat adjustment. This feature makes it possible to set the beat of the movement by simply pushing the pendulum beyond its normal arc of vibration. Once the pendulum's vibrations return to normal, the beat of the movement will be perfectly even.
Westminster Chimes
The chime melody of the famous "Big Ben" in London. It is based on a composition by George F. Haendel. Four notes are played on the quarter hour, eight notes on the half-hour, twelve notes on the three-quarter hour, and sixteen notes plus the hour count on the full hour.
