Watch repair instructions for beginners and watch lovers with an interest in technology
The clock repair book is written by a non-professional who is fascinated by old clocks and has been involved with clock technology for several years. The experience gathered, which is written down in this watch repair book and cannot be found in a similar form as a published publication, relates to clocks that were mass-produced industrially from 1860 to 1940. Watches from this period that you come across at flea markets and online auctions almost always need to be restored. They are relatively inexpensive. In most cases, a watch repair by the watchmaker is not an option, since the costs for the repair far exceed the purchase price.
Repair pendulum clocks
With few exceptions, the causes of a clock not working are four cardinal errors, which can occur individually or together:
- General soiling of the watch
- Faulty pivot bearing in the watch's main plates
- Damage to the clock's spring mechanism
- Defective hollow drive of the clock
Hans Hager's watch repair book explains the procedure for eliminating these cardinal errors, the necessary tools that are already available or can be supplemented in hardware stores and the consumables. The repair of the pendulum clock begins with the dismantling of the movement. A procedure is described that gives the beginner the security of being able to put all the parts back together again. This is followed by the cleaning of the movement and the elimination of the possible causes of the fault mentioned above. When assembling the pendulum clock, topics such as setting the anchor, adjusting the hand train and possible errors in connection with the pendulum suspension are explained. Servicing clocks with a striking function involves adjusting the wheels and levers to ensure the correct number and sequence of strikes. The different constructional designs of half-hour strike mechanisms are discussed in detail. All work is divided into work steps in this book for the repair of pendulum clocks, backed up with pictures and described in such detail that it is possible for the beginner and hobbyist who bought his first pendulum clock at the flea market with a high probability to return a defective pendulum clock to the to make it work.
